Months After Fatal Accident, Mine North Elko Partially Reopens

Lee Smith Mine north of Elko has partially reopened after it was forced to close in October following the death of a miner.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports the U.S Mine Safety and Health Administration canceled stoppage orders in two portions of the mine last month.

Mine owner Small Mine Development LLC is still waiting for approval to fully resume operations.

Some of the miners at Lee Smith who were furloughed during the closure have returned to work.

MSHA says the federal government shutdown has not yet impacted its functions.
