College In North Tahoe Won't Rent Dorm Rooms On Airbnb

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. (AP) — Sierra Nevada College has abandoned a proposal to rent out some of its dorm rooms through Airbnb while they sit vacant during the summer months on the north shore of Lake Tahoe.

College marketing director Daniel Kelly told the Tahoe Daily Tribune that the school in Incline Village considered short-term rentals as a way to generate some extra revenue.

But he says school officials decided turning the dormitory units into a hotel during June and July would conflict with their overall goals.

Kelly says they still intend to offer some rooms to groups consistent with their academic mission and for educational purposes but they don't intend to list them on Airbnb.

Voters in South Lake Tahoe, California, approved a ban on most short-term rentals in November. Neighboring Douglas and Washoe counties in Nevada are currently reviewing their policies.
