Nevada Far Below Recommended Counselor To Student Ratio

Nevada's State School Safety Task Force is recommending legislative action to hire more mental health professionals for the state’s schools.

KLAS-TV reports that Nevada has about one counselor for every 1,000 children but the American School Counselor Association recommends one for every 250 students.

CCSD says the ratio is more like one for every 500 children, both in CCSD and throughout the state.

When it comes to social workers, Assemblywoman Jill Tolles says the national recommendation is the same one for every 250 but she says Nevada also has one social worker for every 1,500 students.

She also says school psychologists are provided at a rate one-fifth of the national recommendation.

Tolles is a member of a School Safety Task Force created by Governor Brian Sandoval.
