Ex-Tahoe Humane Society Director Charged With Embezzlement

RENO, Nev. (AP) — The former director of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society has been charged with embezzlement more than a year after she was fired amid allegations of potential financial irregularities.

The Tahoe Daily Tribune reports the El Dorado County District Attorney charged Nicola Congero Friday with embezzlement from employer stemming from her tenure at the nonprofit based in South Lake Tahoe, California.

The society's board of directors told the newspaper at the time of her ouster in March 2017 they had learned that "certain potential irregularities may have occurred concerning our financial status."

The nonprofit put its headquarters up for sale in June and is in the process of reorganizing.

It's not clear if Congero has a lawyer. Her previous attorney, Adam Spicer, said in an email to The Associated Press Wednesday he's trying to contact her but hasn't been retained.
