LAS VEGAS (AP) — Democrats hoping to take control of the U.S. Senate in November believe one of their best chances to pick up a seat this year lies in battleground Nevada.
Sen. Dean Heller is the only Republican running for re-election in the state that Democrat Hillary Clinton carried in 2016.
Heller has spent nearly three decades in public office and much of the last year facing criticism from both the left and the right for his mixed support for President Donald Trump and efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
His warming relationship with the president is allowing him to avoid a difficult primary challenge.
But he's still expected to face a tough battle from Democratic U.S. Rep. Jacky Rosen in what could be one of the closest Senate races this fall.
