A new report shows that people in Utah consume more than twice the amount of water as the average American.
Mother Jonesreports that only 16 percent of water consumption is municipal, the rest is agriculture.
But 72 percent of that municipal water use is used outdoors. By contrast, outdoor use is only 40 percent among those served by the Los Angeles Water and Power Department.
St. George is one of the driest places in Utah and gets less than nine inches of rain annually.
According to the Utah Rivers Council, residents of St. George pay around $1.20 per thousand gallons once they’ve reached 5,000 gallons of water. Las Vegas water users, by contrast, pay $4.72 per thousand gallons for 30,000 gallons of water.
