LAS VEGAS (AP) — County officials told proponents of a new city east of Las Vegas that they could be saddled with tens of millions of dollars in expenses if the idea goes forward.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that more than 300 people met five Clark County Commission members at a town hall meeting Tuesday at a neighborhood recreation center.
Proponents in the unincorporated Sunrise Manor and Whitney areas were told the cost of a new city providing police, fire, courts, parks and other government services would be more than the amount currently collected in taxes.
City backers complain that roads, parks and police patrols lag behind other parts of the county.
The towns east of Las Vegas and north of Henderson have more 260,000 residents. A new city could be Nevada's third-largest.
