A top leader in a polygamous church in Hildale, Utah was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports Lyle Jeffs was convicted of defrauding a government assistance program and then fleeing law enforcement and will serve five years in federal prison followed by three years of probation and a $1 million restitution fine to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Lyle Jeffs led daily operations of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and is the brother of the church’s imprisoned prophet Warren Jeffs.
Lyle Jeffs pleaded guilty in September to the food stamp fraud charges against him, after he was caught from being on the run for nearly one year.
