Proposal Outlines Air Force Takeover At Desert National Wildlife Refuge

A draft proposal out now from The U.S. Air Force proposes expanding the military’s management and use of Nevada’s Desert National Wildlife Refuge.

The plan would give the Air Force primary jurisdiction over more than two-thirds of the refuge, doing away with the co-management agreement currently in place with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Defenders of Wildlife Vice President for Landscape Conservation Mark Salvo issued a statement saying, “Desert National Wildlife Refuge is for wildlife, not warplanes. The two can exist together, but we must balance our national security with our natural security.”

The proposal is open to public comment until March of next year.
