Airport To Hire Safety Expert After Jet Fuel Tanks Targeted By Las Vegas Shooter

McCarran International Airport officials have drained a giant jet fuel tank that law enforcement authorities say was targeted by the gunman in the Las Vegas mass shooting.

Airport spokesman Chris Jones said Thursday that officials plan to hire a safety expert by the end of the month to inspect the 43,000-barrel tank.

Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo says gunman Stephen Paddock intentionally shot at the tank and one next to it to create a diversion after he fired on the crowd at a country music festival.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports two bullets hit one of the tanks and one bullet penetrated the tank.

Richard Brenner with the Clark County Fire Department says the tanks are designed to withstand extreme forces.

Some local officials have called for a security review of the tanks, which are surrounded by barbed wire
