California IDs To Have Non-Binary Gender Option From 2019

California driver's licenses will allow people to identify as a gender other than male or female starting in 2019.

The state becomes the second in the country to allow the option, following Oregon's law that became active this past July.

The bill signed Sunday by Gov. Jerry Brown also creates a framework for parents of trans* and nonbinary children to change genders listed on birth certificates.

Casey Morell is the coordinating producer of Nevada Public Radio's flagship broadcast State of Nevada and one of the station's midday newscast announcers. (He's also been interviewed by Jimmy Fallon, whatever that's worth.)
Sink your teeth into our annual collection of dining — and drinking — stories, including a tally of Sin City's Tiki bars, why good bread is having a moment, and how one award-winning chef is serving up Caribbean history lessons through steak.
