Wildlife Commission Bans Reptile Collection

The Board of Wildlife Commissioners ruled Saturday to end commercial reptile collection in Nevada.

The board had evidence that the practice had significantly decreased populations of desert species in recent years.

The Nevada Independent reportsthe commissioners voted 6-1 to impose a prohibition on the controversial practice which has been outlawed in most Western states.

The move came as a surprise to many, who expected the commission to take a moderate approach such as imposing collection quotas or seasonal restrictions.

After nearly two hours of testimony and public comment, the commissioners declined to limit the practice with quotas and decided on a blanket ban.
