Draw In Golovkin-Alvarez Fight Hurt Sports Books

Sports books in Las Vegas took a major hit over the weekend as the boxing match between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin was declared a draw.

Oddsmakers had Golovkin winning the fight, and international sports books had him as high as a -500 favorite when live betting was closed.

ESPN reports shortly after the decision, lines formed at the sportsbooks with bettors looking for refunds.

Straight bets on the winner of the fight have to be refunded when a draw is declared.

MGM took the largest bet on the fight at $500,000 on Golovkin. After the decision, Caesars reported taking a six-figure loss.

Statewide, bookmakers estimated $20 million to $30 million was bet on the Golovkin-Alvarez fight.
