Rehab Of Areas Burned In Brian Head Fire Underway

Utah forestry officials have begun rehabilitation efforts near Brian Head Resort after much of the area was scorched in a large summer wildfire.

A $3 million emergency rehabilitation treatment is currently being implemented, which includes dispersing new seeds via helicopter across roughly 5,000 acres of severely burned land.

Ground crews then work to top the new seeds with a layer of straw to help foster new growth and prevent water runoff. About 111 square miles across Iron and Garfield counties were consumed by the fire that is believed to have been started by someone using a weed torch to clear his property.

The communities of Brian Head, Panguitch and Parowan are still feeling those effects, as large amounts of moisture are not absorbed, causing mud flows and flash flood dangers.
