Bipartisan Governors' Group Push To Keep Individual Mandate For Health Care

A bipartisan group of governors is urging Congress to retain the federal health care law’s individual mandate while seeking to stabilize insurance markets.

The plan was introduced by Ohio Governor John Kasich and Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and endorsed by six other governors, including Nevada's Governor Brian Sandoval.

In a letter sent to Congress Thursday, they acknowledged that while the mandate is unpopular, it is an incentive for healthy people to enroll in coverage, which protects against ballooning costs.

The governors also recommended that President Donald Trump commits to cost-sharing reduction payments to insurers and that Congress fund those offsets through at least 2019.
