Gerlach School Asks To Close For Burning Man Festival

The only school in the town closest to the Burning Man Festival is requesting permission from the Washoe County School District to shut its doors throughout the annual event.

School officials have cited safety and logistical concerns for the request, as 70,000 attendees will pass through the small town of Gerlach, which is home to about 200 residents.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports Gerlach’s schools would close from Aug. 28 to Sept. 1 during Burning Man, and make up the missed days at the end of winter break from Jan. 8-12.

The school’s only teacher, Stacey Black, said issues have come up in the past with festival goers wandering into the school’s property.
