Utah Governor Gary Herbert signed a bill into law this week that allows LGBTQ topics to be discussed in schools.
Senate Bill 196 served as an amendment to the health instruction guideline by repealing a law that prohibited advocacy of homosexuality in schools.
LGBTQ rights activist groups had nicknamed the ban the “no promo homo” law, because it had discouraged discussion of homosexuality in Utah’s public schools since 1996.
The St. George Spectrum reportsthat officials from the Washington County School District said they will await extra direction on the matter to come from the Utah State Board of Education, and that district teachers will likely have to complete a training on the content and guidelines of curriculum that would include LGBTQ issues.
