Environmentalists Urge Veto Of Utah Air Quality Bill

Environmental groups are urging Gov. Gary Herbert to veto a measure passed by the state legislature that would allow people to use wood burning to cook on the worst air quality days.

Matt Pacenza of Heal Utah said Thursday at a news conference in Salt Lake City that state officials must look for every possible way to improve air quality, which is a major health concern in the winter.

The Utah Air Quality Board asked Gov. Herbert to veto the bill, saying it would negatively impact the state's ability to meet federal air quality standards.

Traeger Grills CEO Jeremy Andrus says their wood pellet grills aren't meaningful contributor to bad air and that families should be able to choose when they grill. The company supports the bill.

Gov. Herbert didn't respond for comment on the proposal.
