The Bureau of Land Management is planning to round up around 1,500 horses from three herds in Utah this winter.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that helicopter-assisted wranglers will gather the horses beginning this Saturday with 150 horses from the Frisco Herd Management Area outside Milford. The roundup is part of a research project in which 100 horses will be fitted with GPS tracking devices and returned to the range.
All three planned Utah roundups will entail treating mares with fertility vaccines and returning them to the range with an equal number of unsterilized males, a practice that has come under fire by horse advocates.
