LAS VEGAS (AP) — Senate candidate Catherine Cortez Masto says her story is the same as those of immigrants today except that it happened a few generations back.
The Democratic former Nevada attorney general discussed her grandfather's move from Mexico on Wednesday during a lunch meeting that included families with members at risk of deportation. One attendee said he's in deportation proceedings, and his children said they fear the family will be separated.
Cortez Masto criticized her Republican opponent Rep. Joe Heck on immigration, questioning whether he's been persistent enough in finding solutions.
Heck said in July that he's always supported a pathway to citizenship and spent 10 months working on a related bill in 2013, but said the effort fell apart because some activists were more concerned about keeping immigration a political issue.
