Elko County is continuing efforts to install enhanced 911.
It's one of only three counties in the state that do not have the service, and on Wednesday, county commission voted to approve the first step in levying a surcharge on phone use to implement the service.
The Elko Daily Free Press reports a second reading of the measure must be approved this September before it can go into effect.
The fee would raise over $170,000 each year.
The county predicts it'll take around $250,000 to put the system in place.
Enhanced 911 allows dispatchers who receive calls from landline phones to see from where the person is calling geographically.
Further extensions of the system would allow calls from cell phones to receive the same kind of location services.
