Hildale To Get Public Library

A Utah county has set aside money for a public library in a polygamous town on the Utah-Arizona border that hasn't had one for decades because of controlling sect leaders.

The Spectrum newspaper in St. George reports that the Washington County Commission set aside $230,000 Tuesday to buy a building in Hildale for the project.

Director Joel Tucker says he's also got about $60,000 in grants for books, computers and other equipment.

The community is dominated by a polygamous sect led by jailed leader Warren Jeffs.

Leaders try to limit members' exposure to the outside world by prohibiting Internet and books.

The library would mark another small step toward embracing modern society in a town that's split between Jeffs' followers and those who have left or been kicked out.
