Hepatitis Outbreak Doctor Wants Sentence Overturned

A once-prominent Las Vegas doctor wants the Nevada Supreme Court to overturn his convictions in the largest hepatitis C outbreak in state history.

A lawyer for Dipak Desai told justices Tuesday in Las Vegas that the 2007 hepatitis outbreak drew so much attention that Desai didn't get a fair trial.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1SQqe2D ) that prosecutor Michael Staudaher countered that the jury wasn't biased, and saw plenty of evidence before convicting Desai in July 2013 of murder and 26 other charges including neglect of patients and insurance fraud.

Desai is now 66. He's serving 18 years to life in state prison.

He's also serving a federal court sentence of almost six years for health care fraud and conspiracy, and has to pay $2.2 million in restitution.
