A judge has scheduled an Oct. 24 hearing to consider proposed changes to two polygamous communities in Arizona and Utah that were found to have discriminated against nonbelievers.
Three weeks ago, a jury concluded that Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale, Utah, had violated the constitutional rights of nonbelievers by denying them police protection, building permits and water hookups.
Jurors decided the facts of the case, but the remedies to sweeping civil rights violations will be decided by U.S. District Judge H. Russel Holland.
Federal authorities who brought the case against the communities have not specified the changes they will seek in response to the verdict.
But they could ask for the Colorado City Marshal's Office to be disbanded and for its duties to be handed over to local sheriffs.
