Reno School Board Election Draws 20 Candidates For 4 Seats

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Officials say 20 candidates are running for the Washoe County School District board, where four of seven seats will be up for election in November.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that eight people are running for west Washoe County trustee — the most in one zone since at least 1980, according to county election records.

The district has 64,000 students at 76 campuses, with a $450 million annual operating budget.

It has had several controversies in recent years, including findings of open meeting violations and the pay-out of a $770,000 settlement to former superintendent Pedro Martinez, who challenged his firing in 2014.
