Suspected Animal Abuse In Elko Queried

Officials are asking for the public's help in reporting cases of suspected animal abuse.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports cases of malnourished and neglected livestock seem to be increasing.

Elko County deputies have recently responded to several confirmed reports of malnourished horses due to neglect.

Lt. Kevin McKinney said in a statement that horses cannot be seized without probable cause of potentially criminal neglect. A veterinarian must evaluate the animals to make that determination.

In cases where horses are not in immediate danger, a treatment and monitoring plan can be developed so owners can keep their animals.

People are encouraged to report suspected abuse or suspicious behavior to authorities.
