Dayton Students Defend Suspended Teacher

Lyon County students who viewed a controversial picture as part of an assignment are protesting their teacher’s suspension.

KRNV–TV reports Elizabeth Clausen is on temporary leave after asking her students to look at an illustration of a white-hooded caucasian police officer pointing a gun at an African American child in a hoodie.

The image was a prompt for the class’s final exam.  Students were asked to write about the picture in relation to American history and slavery.

Students of Clausen’s say they applaud her for facilitating a discussion.

Nikole Robinson Carroll was a Morning Edition host at KNPR. She also produced segments for KNPR's State of Nevada.
