CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Freshman Republican Assemblyman Stephen Silberkraus says he'll seek re-election to his southern Nevada district.
Silberkraus said in a statement Wednesday that he appreciated people who encouraged him to seek a higher office, but wants to continue representing Henderson in the Assembly.
He said that rather than face a tough election battle, he wanted to spend his energy serving on a committee that's considering splitting the Clark County School District into smaller precincts.
Silberkraus was among 13 Republican Assembly members who voted in favor of a $1.1 billion tax package backed by the governor and helped it reach the constitutionally required two-thirds majority to pass.
The measure angered some conservative voters and is expected to spur Republican primaries, but Silberkraus said he was proud of the decision and will defend it.
