Senator Reid Says He Didn’t Call For UNLV To Change 'Rebel' Mascot

Senator Harry Reid says he’s not asking UNLV to change the name of the Runnin’ Rebels because it could be construed as a reference to the Confederacy.

The Las Vegas Sun reports Reid was asked how he felt about the university’s name in light of the recent uproar over the use of Confederate flags by some state governments.

Reid said he believed the Board of Regents should look into it. News outlets took the quote to mean Reid wanted university and higher education leaders to change it.

But a spokeswoman says Reid wasn't planning to talk about UNLV and wouldn't have said anything if he hadn't been asked.
