"Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" Sign Designer Gets Day

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Clark County commissioners say May 5 is Betty Willis day honoring the designer of the iconic "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign.

The 91-year-old Willis died April 19 in Overton, Nevada. Clark County commissioners are expected to issue a proclamation to her daughter Marjorie Holland at Tuesday morning's regular meeting of the officials.

In a statement commissioners say Willis was a pioneer working in a field dominated by men who left a lasting legacy with her well-lit sign.

Young Electric Sign Company now owns the sign built in 1959 with $4,000 from the county. Most of the Las Vegas Strip, including the sign's location at the southern end, sits in Clark County, not the city of Las Vegas.

The sign is on the National Register of Historic Places.
