CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada Assembly committee has advanced two bills requiring voters to show identification to cast a ballot.
The Assembly Legislative Operations and Elections Committee voted Thursday to send AB253 and AB266 to a money committee for financial review, but without a recommendation to pass it.
The measures would require voters to show a government-issued identification card, such as a driver's license, or an identification card specifically created for the purpose of voting.
The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles would be required to create and distribute free voter cards to a person without another form of identification.
The measures were the subject of a spirited hearing March 17. Witnesses disagreed on whether Nevada suffered from a voter fraud problem and whether an ID requirement would disenfranchise poor and marginalized citizens.
