Soccer Stadium Question Okayed For June Ballot

A Nevada judge gave the go-ahead to an initiative backed by three Las Vegas city council members and opponents of a plan to spend tens of millions of taxpayer dollars on a $200 million downtown Las Vegas soccer stadium.

Clark County District Court Judge Jerry Weise ruled Friday that the nearly 7,000 signatures submitted were enough to qualify the measure for the June ballot.

The judge heard arguments Wednesday by lawyers for the city and opponents led by council members Bob Beers, Stavros Anthony and Lois Tarkanian.

Beers filled a lawsuit Jan. 30 after the city clerk said the minimum number of signatures needed was 8,200, instead of 2,300.

The 24,000-seat stadium is being designed to host a professional soccer team if developers win a Major League Soccer franchise.
