Andres Segovia is known as the father of the modern classical guitar. His strict pedagogical teachings and his adaptations helped him advance and develop his music during his life.
The guitar became a highly revered performing instrument because of three factors – performance, transcriptions and teaching – all of which Segovia excelled at. He also played a significant role in his adaptations of other works to the guitar – most notably with his work with the Twenty Sor Studios.
And, he created what are called the Segovia scales. These scales are widely used even now in public education and in universities worldwide when teaching the guitar.
Respected throughout the music industry, Andres Segovia died at the age of 94 in 1987. But his music lives on. On Jan. 31, celebrated classical guitarist Ricardo Cobo joined Grammy-Award winning classical guitarist Scott Tennant in a performance celebrating Andres Segovia’s work.
The performance was part of UNLV’s Allegro Guitar Series.
