Six months ago, a Democratic Nevada state senator and a former Republican Senate Caucus director were the first two signatures on a petition to support the legalization of recreational marijuana.
Now, they have nearly 200,000 names added to the list. The petition supports a measure that proposes the legalization of small amounts of marijuana for adults 21 and older. It would be regulated and taxed similar to that of alcohol, thus the coalition’s name, The Nevada Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol.
By turning in these signatures, marijuana legalization will be in front of the Nevada Legislature, and if the legislature fails to act, it automatically goes to the ballot box for voters to decide in 2016.
Volunteers and campaign managers canvassed the state this summer during Nevada’s peak temperatures, and their hard work will be showed off Wednesday, Nov. 12, when coalition spokesperson Joe Brezny and Sen. Tick Segerblom (D-Las Vegas) present the boxes of signatures to government officials.
Marijuana legalization would lead to taxes collected through its sale, which would in turn go to education and other things Nevada desperately needs, Brezny said.
