Henderson Jail To Make Room For Weekend Offenders

Henderson City Council has approved using the Henderson municipal jail to house some misdemeanor offenders arrested during weekends on the Las Vegas Strip.

Officials are calling the summer-season contract with Clark County the "Safe Strip Initiative."

Henderson gets about $102 per day for the first two days each detainee is held, and about $112 per day after the third day.

The cross-jurisdictional program sends up to 50 detainees per weekend to the 540-bed Henderson Detention Center.

Meanwhile, the Clark County jail in downtown Las Vegas is undergoing a four-year, $88 million renovation.
