Ishmael Reed on Jazz, Obama, and Today's African-American

Ishmael Reed is one of the most prolific African-American poets and essayists to date, known for stirring controversy when it comes to politics and black culture.  He says he "holds up the mirror to hypocrisy."  But he's also a longtime jazz musician.  Ishmael Reed weighs on music and his home base of Oakland, CA - a jazz haven - and its changing African-American culture.

Ishmael Reed speaks on a panel about jazz along with singer Ellis Marsalis and singer Marlena Shaw on Thursday, March 24, at 7 p.m. at UNLV's Doc Rando Hall.  The event is being put on by UNLV's Black Mountain Institute.
