The Nevada Health and Bioscience Corporation will open its academic lab in the first quarter of 2027. That’s according to the company's latest announcement.
The two-story building that will soon become the NHBC Academic Laboratory is currently just a shell.
But once completed, the $44 million facility will include a blood center, a drug toxicology facility, spaces for molecular and transplant testing, and academic training opportunities.
James Waddoups is NHBC’s president and CEO. He said the lab should improve Nevadans’ diagnostic wait times.
“The broader community will benefit from the quicker response times on testing, keeping that testing here in Nevada, not having to send it out of state, taking many days,” Waddoups says.
Plans for the biosafety lab include BSL-3-level safety precautions, the second-highest safety ranking, for the study of highly contagious pathogens like Tuberculosis.
The site is located just east of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine’s medical education building, which NHBC also developed.
Once built, the lab is expected to run 1.5 million tests in the first year alone, with officials saying its capacity will likely increase from there.
