Backers of a ballot initiative aimed at enshrining abortion rights in the Nevada constitution say they’re seeing broad support from across the political spectrum.
State election officials approved the proposed amendment last week, saying it satisfies all the conditions for appearing on the state’s November ballot.
Nevada is the fifth state to put the issue of abortion rights in the hands of voters this November.
According to the Nevada Secretary of State’s office, election officials verified more than 125,000 signatures on the petition used to place the question on the ballot. A minimum of 102,000 signatures was needed.
Lindsey Harmon is the executive director of Nevadans For Reproductive Freedom, the political action committee behind the initiative.
She said voters across the state recognize the importance of reproductive rights, regardless of their political affiliation.
“So we're seeing a lot of enthusiasm from young people and first time voters. But also I think that, you know, a ballot initiative like this, you know, sees a lot of support on both sides of the aisle. And so we're seeing, you know, a lot of Republican support as well.”
To amend the state’s constitution, voters must approve the ballot question this year and again in 2026.
Since the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe, laws in fourteen states have gone into effect banning nearly all abortions.
