Sex workers in Nevada are opposing a proposed ordinance change in Nye County that would limit the hours brothel workers can leave their workplaces.
Currently, sex workers are required to undergo weekly health checks and given up to 24 hours off-site at a time for that purpose.
Under the amendment, legal prostitutes would not be allowed to leave brothels for more than six hours per 10 days without being retested for sexually transmitted diseases screening.
That time would also be limited to a window between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. If a worker has proof of a medical appointment, up to 12 hours would be allowed between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
According to the Las Vegas Sun, brothel owners helped craft the ordinance over fears that prostitutes would have unprotected sex during those hours away from the brothel.
Sex workers object to the new rules because they feel the rules infringe on their rights.
Under state law, sex workers are considered independent contractors.
