Las Vegas Tourism Board OKs Transit System Talks With Musk Firm

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A company backed by Elon Musk is one step closer to start boring tunnels in Las Vegas for an express transit system at a massive convention center.

The board overseeing Las Vegas' tourism agency on Tuesday voted to authorize contract negotiations to begin with Musk's enterprise The Boring Company.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority expects to return to the board with a full design and proposed contract by June.

The system of just over a mile long is expected to debut by January 2021 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, which hosts over 1 million people every year.

The approval from the board was not unanimous. Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman voted against starting negotiations arguing the company does not have a "track record of achievement."
