City of Las Vegas officials are considering an ordinance that would allow fish spas to open in Las Vegas.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports City Councilwoman Michele Fiore is sponsoring the ordinance that would allow the spas to open.
The spas use small fish that originate from the Middle East to exfoliate and remove dead skin from one’s feet. Some states have banned fish spas and at least two proposed fish spa bills have died in the Nevada Legislature in the past nine years.
Concerns range from health and sanitation issues to the fish becoming an invasive species if they are released into the wild.
If the city council passed the ordinance, the fish spas would be required to put together a risk assessment that addressed infection control and other employee and customer health matters.
The proposal will need to go through a committee hearing before being placed on the city council agenda.
