Mining Industry Looking To Reverse Ban On Uranium Mining Near Grand Canyon

Representatives of the U.S. mining industry are asking the Supreme Court to overturn an Obama-era rule prohibiting the mining of uranium on public lands adjacent to the Grand Canyon.

The Guardian reportsthat the National Mining Association and the American Exploration and Mining Association filed petitions on Friday seeking to reverse a 2012 ban on new uranium mining claims on more than 1 million acres of public land surrounding Grand Canyon National Park.

That ban was upheld in December by the 9 th Circuit Court of Appeals.  A spokesman for the NMA said his organization was challenging the authority of the Secretary of the Interior to implement the ban.
