A Nevada legislator has proposed banning the extraction of fossil fuels in the state.

Hydraulic fracturing or fracking would be banned under Assembly Bill 159 sponsored by Assemblyman Justin Watkins.

AB 159 passed in the Assembly on a 26-15 vote, but still, needs approval from the Senate before the end of the legislative session. The bill was heard in a Senate Committee on Natural Resources, and the committee adjourned Wednesday without taking a vote.

The bill must make it out of the Senate and to Governor Brian Sandoval’s desk by June 5 in order to become law.
