LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Clark County Planning Commission has voted against a proposed development that would overlook Red Rock Canyon.
The Las Vegas Sun reports that on Tuesday the commission unanimously voted against the project, sending their vote along as a recommendation to Clark County commissioners. Commissioners will vote on the issue in December.
Las Vegas developer Jim Rhodes has been working to build a community over the 2,010 acres in the town of Blue Diamond. The development would have more than 5,000 homes and would eventually replace Rhodes' active gypsum mine, which is on the property.
The vote is the most recent in a long battle over Rhodes' land. In 2003, the state Legislature passed rules prohibiting increased density near Red Rock's outlying areas. Rhodes successfully challenged the rules in court.
