Feds Asked To Permit Aug. 14-15 Nevada Desert Off-Road Race

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Federal land managers in Nevada are considering a permit for an Aug. 14-15 desert vehicle race on a route called the longest off-road course in the U.S.

The Bureau of Land Management in Carson City says the 19th annual off-highway race is scheduled from outside Las Vegas to near Reno by the Best In The Desert Racing Association.

Officials say the two-day event is due to begin at 5:30 a.m. Aug. 14 just south of Beatty, and end about 11 a.m. Aug. 15 in Dayton.

The BLM says the 543-mile route covers gravel and rough dirt roads and washes on public lands in Nye, Esmeralda, Mineral, Churchill and Lyon counties.

Organizers expect 100 motorcycle and all-terrain vehicles and 200 trucks and buggies to compete, serviced by 14 designated pit locations.
