Half Of Virginia Street Bridge Demolition Complete

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Half of the 11-year-old iconic Virginia Street Bridge has been demolished as part of an $18.2 million project to help with the regions overall flood control.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that the complete tear-down of the bridge was expected to take about a total of two months. It's expected to be completed and open to traffic by May.

Known as the "Wedding Ring Bridge," it became a symbol of Reno as the "Divorce Capital of the World" until other states relaxed their laws in the 1960s.

The legend of women walking a block from the courthouse to the bridge over the Truckee River dates to the 1920s.

Photographs and Hollywood movies depict the scenes — the most famous with Marilyn Monroe in the 1961 film "The Misfits."
