Poetry Workshops at the Left of Center Art Gallery

Poetry Workshops at the Left of Center Art Gallery

Poems can be inspired by just about anything, and that, obviously, includes works of art. Those poems are known as ekphrastic poetry. In these three workshops beginning and experienced poets are invited to use artworks from Left of Center’s collections to inspire their own ekphrastic masterpieces. All run from 1 to 3.

On September 14, writer JM Huck will lead a workshop using visual art, music, and group discussion to help generate poetry.

On October 12, Join writer Sada Maumfashi to view Left of Center’s African Museum to inspire your writing. Participants will practice ways to extend the visual language of a work of art into poetry. What does it mean to really look at art? What are the politics of looking? How can words help us to see?

On November 16 Join writer Lauren Gleave in the African Art Museum at Left of Center Art Gallery. Poets will gain inspiration by their interactions with the art, their movement through the space, and the emotions that surround that experience of communing with visual art pieces.

Registration is required. Full description available by clicking on "Get Tickets."

Note that the African Art Museum inside the Left of Center Art Gallery is accessible only by stairs.
