The Nevada Legislature is seen on April 13, 2025 in Carson City, Nevada.

With less than three weeks left in the legislative session, Nevada lawmakers have officially introduced Republican Governor Joe Lombardo’s education reform bill.

Assembly Bill 584 is a 184-page omnibus that largely looks to expand upon Lombardo’s State of the State promise. The governor said he would increase school district accountability based on student performance. It also establishes a new fund to give high-performing educators a bonus.

One provision that’s sure to draw the ire of Democratic leaders in the legislature would make it easier for students at chronically low-performing schools to transfer to a different school, including state-approved private schools using public funds.

For their part, Democratic leaders are also looking to pass their own education package. That would include provisions meant to increase accountability and teacher retention, as well as more money for pre-k programs.

The last day of the legislative session is June 2.
