City of Las Vegas OKs funding for Westside, animal welfare bills

The Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday approved funding for a study exploring options for revitalizing Jackson Avenue on the Historic Westside.

The street in the once-segregated part of town was lined with businesses catering to African Americans, most Black-owned and operated. But the street once known as "The Strip on the Westside" has been declining for years, with many empty buildings.

Animal welfare was the focus of two bills approved by the council, both introduced by Councilwoman Victoria Seaman.

The first limits the number of animals a pet shop or breeder can sell to one household during a calendar year and requires them to keep track. This comes after a deadly hoarding case last year where a pet store sold multiple animals to the people involved.

The second bill sets a fine of $1,000 for a conviction on pet abandonment, up from $200. Seaman noted that there seems to be a rise in people abandoning their pets, who are often in poor health when rescued.
