It’s been 8 months since the Department of Justice released the findings of an investigation into Las Vegas Metro’s use of force procedures. At the time of the investigation, the department was third in the country in the amount of officer- involved shootings, behind only Houston and Chicago.
A federal review of changes instituted so far says that Metro has completed 56 of the Department of Justice’s 80 recommendations and gives the Las Vegas police credit for making progress. One of the items the report congratulates Metro on is the institution of a plan to equip officers with body cameras.
But advocates for body cameras say that Metro Police’s plan to incorporate the equipment doesn’t go far enough – body cameras are only required for police hired as of July 2013, and are optional for the rest of the force.
